Fàilte - Welcome to the Skye Gardening Society website.

With well in excess of 100 members, Skye Gardening Society is today a strong, healthy, vibrant and non-profit independent organisation that promotes interest in gardening and its application. However, the Society's origins date back to before 1939 when horticultural interests were provided for under the auspices of Skye Agricultural Society. Then the provision was for a single flower show and early records show that some domestic items were included. Entries mainly came from the gardens of larger estate properties and houses and were produced by professional gardeners. For full details of this period, see the "History" section.

At one time, an annual show only had to be provided for and all that required was for a committee to meet at an appropriate time, arrange and man the show. Today, the Society is run by a Committee that meets all year round to manage its many events.

A debt of gratitude is owed to many of the early gardeners involved in the Skye Horticultural Society and it is hoped that they would approve of the direction that Skye Gardening Society has taken since its formation.

The Society has remained true to its gardening tradition, but has expanded its role to promote gardening activities throughout the Island's schools and youth groups. The Society now holds two shows per year; a Spring Show is held in March/April, alternately in Dunvegan/Broadford, and Flower and Produce Show held in Portree in August. In addition to the shows, the Society annually hosts talks by gardening specialists, a Gardeners' Question Time, a plant sale, and a light-hearted and fun gardening quiz/lunch event.
